Although the Axemen have had a tough week with player injuries and suspensions they are making no excuses for the humbling experience that occurred on Saturday. Coach Howland said, "Yes we had a tough week on and off the field with various challenges, but after being beat 60 to nil you cannot kid anyone that you could have won the game. Could we have made the scoreline more respectable with less injuries and maybe less distraction, yes, but we have now been on both sides of this type of scoreline and all you can do is use it as a character building day and come away a stronger side."
The Axemen, who traveled with only 17 players (of which 2 where making their league debut), started the game matching the Bulls for 20 minutes with neither side scoring. The Bulls then got 2 tough, well executed trys to make the score 10 nil at the 30 minute mark. The Axemen day then start to take some serious set backs as injuries mounted with frequency.
Over the next 50 minutes the Axemen had broken noses to Jeff Pinney and Aaron Sane, head clashes that needed sideline attention to Nick Shea and Tim Stouder, Shoulder Injuries to John Turlington and Justin Sphaler and Jay Defau ended the day with a concussion. The team looked like the "walking wounded" as they arrived back to Jacksonville on their Southwest Airlines flight.
The final score was 60 to nil.
Débutantes Morgan Adams and Matthew Visalli had solid performances in their first game in the League code and Marc "Tex" Hanke was by far the best of the Axemen with 110% effort in everything he done on the field.
